UFC 224 Live

UFC once again heads to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Saturday as the promotion presents UFC 224 featuring a women's bantamweight championship bout as the main event.
Women's bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes will look to defend her title successfully for the third consecutive outing when she takes on No. 2-ranked contender Raquel Pennington. Nunes (15-4) earned her last victory to retain her championship at UFC 215 in September 2017 when she defeated Valentina Shevchenko via unanimous decision. If Pennington (9-5) is going to shock the world with a title win, she'll have to do so by shaking off some rust inside the Octagon. Pennington's last UFC appearance was at UFC 205 in November 2016, but she did earn a huge win in that bout, a three-round unanimous decision victory over former champion Miesha Tate.

The UFC returns tonight with a PPV card that is, compared to their last offering, relatively unscathed. UFC 224 goes down in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and there is a Brazilian atop the card looking to hang on to her championship belt.

The main event has Bahia, Brazil’s Amanda Nunes going for her third successful title defense. This time she faces former TUF member Raquel Pennington. ATT’s Lioness comes into the fight the heavy favourite. Will Nunes do what’s expected of her and edge closer to Ronda Rousey’s six title defense record or will Pennington pull off the upset and bring the belt back to the United States?

The remainder of the pay-per-view card is pretty interesting with up and comers and legends vying for significance. The co-main event has reluctant middleweight Kelvin Gastelum taking on another Brazilian veteran, this time it’s Ronaldo Souza aka Jacare. Also on the PPV Mackenzie Dern takes on Amanda Cooper at what was supposed to be a strawweight bout. Before that John Lineker fights Brian Kelleher at bantamweight and Vitor Belfort fights Lyoto Machida at middleweight.

The FX (yes, FX) prelims begin at 8pm ET. That portion of the card is headlined by TUF vet Cezar Ferreira vs. DWTNCS vet Karl Roberson at 185lbs. Also on the prelims there’s Aleksei Oleinik vs. Junior Albini (heavyweight), Davi Ramos vs Nick Hein (lightweight), and Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos vs. Sean Strickland (welterweight).

There’s four fights on the UFC Fight Pass Early Prelims tonight. Those start at 6:15PM ET and include Warlley Alves vs. Sultan Aliev (welterweight), Thales Leites vs. Jack Hermansson (middleweight), Alberto Mina vs. Ramazan Emeev (welterweight) and Markus Perez vs. James Bochnovic (middleweight).
